Cra
A calmer browsing experience for macOS
Cra is a free and open-source web browser designed specifically for macOS users who are seeking a calmer and more organized browsing experience. It aims to provide a familiar environment for those transitioning from or looking for an alternative to the now-discontinued Arc browser. The core of Cra's design centers around replicating the functionality and workflow of Arc's distinctive sidebar, offering users a seamless transition.
For users migrating from Arc, Cra offers direct import capabilities. This means that your existing Arc spaces, pinned tabs, favorites, and even your archive can be brought over in a single process. This feature is crucial for maintaining your established browsing habits and ensuring that your digital workspace remains intact. The browser aims for a one-to-one replacement experience, preserving the muscle memory associated with Arc's shortcuts and interface elements. This includes the same sidebar layout with customizable colors and emojis for each space, and the grid-like arrangement of favorites at the top.
The functionality within Cra mirrors that of Arc. It features a command bar accessible via keyboard shortcut that allows for quick searching of tabs, archive, history, and various actions, intelligently ranked based on user preference. Tabs that are not actively used are automatically archived after a set period, ranging from 12 hours to 30 days, keeping the active tab list tidy and manageable. This auto-archiving feature contributes to a less cluttered and more focused browsing session, with all archived tabs remaining searchable. The library section, accessible through a keyboard shortcut, neatly organizes downloads and archived tabs within the sidebar.
Cra also supports advanced browsing features to enhance productivity and organization. The tab switcher provides previews of your five most recent tabs within a space. "Little Arc" functionality allows links opened from other applications to be promoted into a dedicated space for focused viewing. For multitasking, the split view feature enables users to arrange up to four panes side-by-side or stacked, facilitating side-by-side comparisons or workflow management. Additionally, Picture in Picture support allows media to be viewed in a floating window even when switching applications.
Under the hood, Cra is built on the Chromium engine, providing compatibility with Chrome extensions and access to Chrome DevTools for developers. It includes built-in ad and tracker blocking to enhance privacy and security, and offers features like an "Air Traffic Control" system to direct links from other apps to a chosen space, and a "Site Control Center" for quick actions and extension management. The browser also supports Live Folders for keeping track of dynamic content like GitHub pull requests. Cra is available for free and is compatible with macOS 14 and later on Apple silicon Macs, focusing on providing a stable and efficient alternative for its target audience.
